Type of Project: Wayfinding and Primary Identification Signage

We secured the signage contract for the completed and reopened King County Water Taxi and Kitsap Fast Ferries walk-on passenger terminal for Phase 1 of the Colman Dock renovation project in Seattle. The new facility opened on August 12, 2019 and serves commuters, travelers, and tourists pass through the terminal on their way between downtown Seattle and West Seattle, Vashon, Bremerton, Kingston, and coming next year, Southworth. This site is part of a larger plan that will reimagine Seattle’s Waterfront District in the wake of the removal of the SR-99 Alaskan Way Viaduct. 

Per the King County website: “The new Pier 50 passenger-only ferry terminal features a new covered facility with capacity for about 500 people and is a significant improvement from the previous facility, which left many passengers out in the elements while waiting. Additional features include ADA improvements, including a tactile path and tactile signs for the visually impaired, an elevator to the new pedestrian bridge that connects to the new Washington State Ferries terminal, and an ADA assistance station.

The total cost of the project is $45 million, which includes the new building and the new float for boats to dock. Approximately 80 percent of the funding came from a grant from the Federal Transit Administration.”

The bulk of the terminal signage package is comprised of directional wayfinding (both exterior and interior) along with ADA/regulatory signage required for operation. The package also includes a new pylon sign and structure at the edge of the terminal to better direct foot traffic and oversized logo identification to let passengers know they’re in the right place. 

Highlights of the signage package include:

  • Exterior Main Pylon IDThis sign is a 36 x 60” aluminum double face cabinet featuring 2” deep aluminum reverse pan halo LED illuminated letters (“50”) along with push through sign white acrylic in addition to white and black 1/4” aluminum logo sets. The pylon sign was installed for maximum visibility along Alaskan Way on wide flange steel beams supported in concrete footing and is primarily visible from the north and south.
  • Exterior ID: Logos were fabricated from .5” thick aluminum flat cut for both the King County Water Taxi and Kitsap Fast Ferries. These striking ID signs are hard to miss installed on the exterior side of the walk-on ferry terminal closest to the docking area and exit for passengers leaving the vessel.
  • Overhead Direction ID: These signs were fabricated from 2” square tube frame and durable aluminum sign panel faces painted to match with white vinyl graphics applied for wayfinding throughout the terminal. All signs installed with custom square mounting plates to steel beams.
  • ADA / Regulatory Signs: Fabricated from aluminum and photopolymer with custom paint match throughout the ferry terminal.
  • Overhead Directional: The overhead directional number system signs were installed for clear and easy line management for walk-on ferry passenger loading.
  • Informational Panels: Fabricated and installed in the customer ticket kiosk area.

Liv E John

The exterior architectural panels on the Liv E John apartment building make a bold statement among a sea of modern and traditional housing in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle. We skinned custom cut dibond aluminum panels with exterior grade vinyl to produce a five-story beacon of modern design. Each panel was produced in-house by our skilled installers.

Sequim Civic Center

For this project, we were asked to provide exterior and interior signs as part of the new 35,000 sf facility that opened in 2015 for the City of Sequim Civic Center. The building houses the Police Station, City Hall and a community plaza.

WaterJet cut metal was used to created the striking building ID sign, a long-lasting and beautiful compliment to the elegant design aesthetic of the overall project. Inlaid bronze dimensionals were installed into the curved concrete wall and surrounding plaza. All ADA and code compliant signage on the interior of the building. Parking lot and post signage was also part of the overall package. 

In addition, a custom painted acrylic logo for the Council Chambers was added later. The logo was dimensionally cut and post mounted.

Amazon – Boren

For the Amazon – Boren project, we worked on a range of signage including tenant blade sign updates and cut vinyl for The Deck, a popular dining destination for both employees and locals in the SLU area. Old tenant signs were removed, with newly fabricated discs providing better visibility hanging above the pedestrian sidewalk. 

Additionally, new elevator placards were printed, cut and installed to ID the correct floor location. And white cut vinyl was added to The Deck street-level exterior doors and doors leading into the elevator bay via the parking garage.

Batik Apartments

We were contracted to work on Batik Apartments, a new build residential apartment building in the revitalized Yesler Terrace section of Seattle (positioned in between Capitol Hill and Pioneer Square neighborhoods). We worked from an existing design package, and project managed the entire approval, production and installation process. Batik was built in 2018, a LEED Certified Platinum property with 195 units and seven stories.

The package consisted of highly custom ADA Code signage, unit signage (both interior and exterior), common area identifications, interior wayfinding, cut vinyl and parking. All signs were fabricated using high-end accents and materials to match the aesthetic of the overall building appearance.

Liberty Bank Building

Liberty Bank Building, built on the site of the first African American-owned bank in the Pacific Northwest, provides 115 affordable homes and affordable retail space for three local minority-owned businesses in Seattle’s Central District neighborhood. The building is located at 24th & Union, and features a full range of aesthetically unique and functional architectural elements and signage.

A full interior and exterior sign package was produced for the building, ranging from ADA Code signs to building ID to large format lobby artwork. The design aesthetic for the Liberty Bank Building was a critical component for this project, including vibrant use of color and pattern that truly stands out from standard residential and commercial projects. Some of the highlights on the interior package feature multi-panel original artwork that spans the primary lobby entrance, additional metal prints featuring original artwork, and bright orange ADA-compliant code and unit signs.

The exterior work includes painted aluminum dimensional letters on both the freestanding courtyard portal and canopy on the corner of the building, nearly 175 square feet of canopy ribbon artwork with custom printed vinyl mounted to dibond panels, and cut vinyl retail tenant numbering. This project also features a deep fabricated, custom metallic painted aluminum logo blade sign that delivers a creative and unique corner element to the building. 

Our team provided onsite installation of all elements as well as custom fabrication support for the full sign package. This diverse and creative project was a highlight of the new year and integrates with a range of other artistic elements that combine to make this a building like no other in Seattle.

Corporate Campus East

For this project, the client was looking for a unique monument sign that would make an immediate impact. We started with the base; digging out the length of a stone planter in front of the building. A strong, sleek foundation was required to house a long aluminum sign cabinet with custom branded paint and aluminum dimensional lettering. But the real unique factor with this piece was the custom etched inlaid glass panels that elevate the design and buck traditional exterior monument design.

Updated building signage and campus wayfinding pieces were also included.

Seattle Exchange @ Southcenter

Type of Project: Standardized business park signage

Evergreen Sign Company was thrilled to work on this ambitious project in 2018 with the property owner to provide standardized signage across the entirety of the Seattle Exchange @ Southcenter business park, located in Tukwila, WA. The property owner was focused on the aesthetics, standardization and overall effectiveness of a complete exterior and interior signage overhaul. Little expense was spared when selecting materials and design elements, and our in-house design team was mindful of the City of Tukwila Subarea Plan and newest local architecture as the package developed.

Evergreen was charged with developing signage for this park through all phases of work: site surveys, design, permitting, fabrication, tenant communication, and installation, as well as ongoing maintenance. The overall package is comprised of a collection of identification signs that labels the park as a whole, labels the individual buildings contained within, and identifies the tenants individually. The park itself covers 1,796,033 square feet or 41.23 acres. It encompasses 38 buildings, and is occupied by over 300 small and medium size businesses.


The comprehensive signage package consists of:

  • Main Monuments: Located at each of the three primary entrances to Seattle Exchange @ Southcenter. They present a dramatic and attractive entry to the park featuring blackened hot roll steel exteriors, reverse cutaways and dimensional letters. The color palette stands out in any season and commands attention along busy roadways.
  • Building ID Monuments: Located strategically through the park, these work in tandem with Building ID numbers and addresses to assist with park interior wayfinding. These feature the same basic design elements and materials as the main monuments using steel, cutaways and dimension.
  • Building ID: Each building (38 total) received updated painted PVC panels that call out the building number as well as required addresses in places where applicable.
  • Exterior/Mezzanine Tenant Signs: Typical exterior tenant signs show the suite number/address/company name and a space for branding/logos. Signs were fabricated from blackened steel plates with painted panels for changeable tenant information carrying the high-end finish of the monuments through the exterior package.
  • Mezzanine Directory: Select two story buildings use directory style signage to reduce clutter on the fascia of the building and use directional arrows where needed to show tenant location.
  • Interior Tenant Signs: All tenants with an interior entrance into their space have signs in compliance with ADA standards that incorporate suite number/address, fixed color and fonts, a space for tenant branding and raised copy with Grade II Braille.
  • Interior wall graphics: Common interior building hallways and property owner office space received full coverage color wall graphics (printed on interior matte vinyl) in a variety of patterns and color palettes.
  • Interior Signage: All common interior doors are labeled in accordance with ADA compliance standards. These doors include restrooms, electrical rooms, janitor rooms, etc.
  • Exterior Electrical Room Signs: All buildings received an Exterior Electrical Room Sign package incl. a placard sign that matches tenant signage, after hours emergency contact info, an ACM panel with reflective red background labeling the Fire Alarm Control Panels.
  • Vinyl: All rear entrance doors of ground level tenant spaces are labels with white high-performance vinyl showing the address or suite number. Additionally, all primary entrance doors to exterior suites and mezzanine entrances are labeled similarly. Affected tenants were also allowed standardized area for cut vinyl graphics.
  • Leasing Signs: Several 4’ wide x 8’ tall double-sided signs were buried into the landscaping and contact business park leasing agent contact information was included.

Following months of design, fabrication, and installation work, the end result is reflected in the photo gallery here. This comprehensive business park package displays the full range of skills of the entire Evergreen Sign Company team, with a tip of the hat to our installers, sub-contractors and project managers who worked tirelessly to hit critical deadlines and remained steadfast during the production process. Myrtle Woldson Performing Arts Center (Gonzaga Univ.)

Type of Project: Full signage package – interior and exterior

Evergreen Sign Company was selected as the sign vendor for a new state-of-the-art facility setting in motion a new era for Gonzaga’s leadership in the creative arts and the humanities. The Myrtle Woldson Performing Arts Center is a 58,000 square foot facility located on the campus of Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA. The main auditorium configuration holds 750 people and will also feature a 150-seat flexible recital hall space, an interpretive center and learning lab for students and residents of the Spokane region. Gonzaga broke ground on the facility in Spring 2017.

Highlights of the interior and exterior sign package, designed by Studio SC (Seattle):

  • Canopy Lettering – Main Entrance: The main entrance will feature dramatically tapered dimensional letters finished in a bronze metallic paint and flush mounted letters on the exterior soffit. The unique 48” taper appropriately adds drama and impact immediately upon entry.
  • Exterior Secondary Entry Identification/Monument: More flush mounted reverse pan channel letters will carry the color palette and shine of this non-illuminated signage through to the secondary entry exterior wall and monument sign.
  • Interior Directional/Entry ID: Primary interior directional signage will feature russet tones in laser cut acrylic letters and arrows, flush mounted to walls. Secondary directional panels will be fabricated from painted acrylic and cut vinyl lettering, flush mounted to walls.
  • Architectural/ADA Code Signage: Acrylic panels will be fabricated with Clear Grade II Braille in a variety of russet tones consistent with the overall color palette. Spacer panels will be painted and affixed to backs before flush mounting to the wall throughout the entire facility.

SR 99 Tunnel Project

We were awarded the signage package as part of the overarching completion of the SR 99 Tunnel Project, opened in February 2019. The two-mile, double-decker tunnel carries a section of State Route 99 under Downtown Seattle from SoDo in the south to South Lake Union in the north. It is the largest double-deck highway tunnel of its kind in the country and features modern safety and operations systems. The total value of the project overall is estimated at $3.3B, with $1.2M designated for signage. We recognized the bid opportunity presented by Seattle Tunnel Partners as a platform designed to reach out to locally-owned signage experts who could not only handle the production capacity required, but also project manage to critical deadlines and assemble an installation crew that could work efficiently and safely to code.

The SR99 Tunnel Project signage system is large in scope and volume. We provided detailed shop drawings for a wide range of oversized stencil graphics, rigid signs, and cut vinyl; communicated with construction project managers for approvals; sourced materials for each set of signage; and set production schedules to meet aggressive installation goals. Our onsite installation crew was certified in OSHA training and safety, and supervised at all stages inside the tunnel by Company Owner Brian Sims and Production Manager/Shop Foreman Jeremy Kirchner. Our large format department worked countless hours prepping every inch of paint masking, vinyl, printed panels and hardware – all of this while continuing to produce work for our regular clients in the process.


The full contractual signage package(s) consists of:

  • North Operations Building: Flat cut aluminum WSDOT logo and building identification lettering and cast aluminum letters finished with dark bronze anodized effect were mounted to aluminum bars installed flush to the building exterior. Additionally, we printed a 15-panel, 34.5’ vinyl full color mural and installed in the landing and stairwell wall leading down to the egress corridor.
  • South Operations Building: Flat cut aluminum WSDOT logo and building identification lettering and cast aluminum letters finished with dark bronze anodized effect were mounted to aluminum bars installed flush to the building exterior.


Northbound / Southbound Traffic Passages (two miles inside bored tunnel):

  • Stencil Painted Graphics – Fire Zone and Exit: Primarily known now as the 7ft tall “green stick figures” or “green running men”, these stencil painted graphics included Exit location directional signage and Fire Zone identification throughout the entire length of the northbound and southbound tunnel passages. Paint mask was called out for and oversized stencils were installed at critical elevation views. Additional stencil painted graphics were commissioned for smaller black Fire/Phone identification throughout each passage as well.
  • Breakform Fire / Phone Signs: Breakformed .090 white painted aluminum Fire Pull and Standalone Phone signs (14) with vinyl graphics mounted with galvanized angle strap and break-away sign post anchors.
  • Exit / No Exit / Caution Signs: Aluminum panels with reflective sheeting was produced with either direct print graphics or cut vinyl lettering dependent on callouts. Signs were mounted with Silicone and VHB.
  • Cut Vinyl: White, red and black cut vinyl were applied to all wall and doorway points of exit and entry throughout the length of the tunnel on all levels.
  • Stairwell Signs: Black acrylic laminate signs with raised white tactile lettering were mounted according to plans to note street access locations throughout length of tunnel on all levels.


Utilidor and Egress Passages (Mechanical, Maintenance, etc.):

  • Aluminum Panels – Exit Identification: Aluminum panel signs of varying sizes produced with printed vinyl graphics applied first surface and fastened to the walls with SST Channel Support System.

Contract work of this magnitude offers opportunities for local sign vendors like us to continue to grow and reinvest in our business. Equipment upgrades, service offerings and expansion of capabilities benefits all of our clients and is vital to staying in step with an evolving print and sign industry.
